Vol. 22  (14) | 04/8/2022

Traditionally bands, music groups, and choral groups are quite successful in their fundraising efforts.  Fundraising is a way of life for these groups - it is expected and just short of mandatory.  There are a lot of expenses involved with music groups. Equipment, instruments, travel, uniforms, fees, lodging, meals, etc.  Many of these groups - especially large marching bands - can have more than 200 members once you include color guard and all the members. Band members understand that they have to raise funds in order to do the things that they want to do musically.  Also when moving a group that large it takes lots of funds to get from point A to point B. Think about travel logistics for 200 people … it can be overwhelming AND expensive.

Usually, there is a booster group/parent group that heads up the fundraising efforts so that the band director(s) don’t have to worry about it.  This also allows them to focus on the musical productions for the upcoming marching season.

Band camps are usually held in late summer (July/August) and that is a great time to conduct the fundraising kickoff.  Sometimes a one-hour Sprint sale might make sense, too.  These are enticing especially when the band is limited on time due to rehearsals for upcoming contests and performances.

Reach out to your band directors, choral directors, and any other music departments and get some things lined up NOW.  Summer band camp will start in less than 5 months.  These are dedicated students who are driven musically and will reap the benefits of successful fundraising efforts while performing both on the field and on stage.

Who is the right person to contact in the music department?

In the music department, you might have a department chair in a large high school.

Band Director / Director of Bands / Assistant Directors
Choral Director / Orchestra Leader / Conductor / Music Chair

Always check the website first to get their exact title and keep in mind that some have higher level music degrees so they might be Dr. Smith or Dr. Jones in addition to their title at school.

If the website is incomplete or not updated, reach out to the central office and ask them.  They will know.

The Importance of an END DATE for Group Sales

Setting an end date is important in a traditional fundraiser to keep the group focused, to help make sure unsold books are returned, and to help customers understand when they will receive their books.  If you have questions about end dates please contact the Group Relations Team: grouprelations@savearound.com
