As we celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd, it’s also important to feature kids and reading. March is considered National Reading Month and of course school libraries need funds, too. Classes can rotate through the library (elementary) and have a “kickoff” with the media specialist / librarian. You might pitch the librarian on earning funds to buy new books or equipment needed for the library. The students might be motivated to help fundraise since they all have the library available to them. This would also be a motivated, organized individual within the school that would probably be a great chairperson to work with on the sale.
Reading is incredibly important and is a basic building block of learning. Reading helps develop inference, deduction and comprehension. From reading a street sign to a list of ingredients or directions on a prescription, reading is vital to survival in life. Here are a few top ten reasons why reading is important.
Reading…
Exercises the brain
Is a form of free entertainment
Improves concentration
Improves the ability to focus
Improves literacy
Improves sleep
Assists with general knowledge
Is motivational.
Reduces street
Strengthens and improves memory
School libraries need funds, too!
Use the National Reading Month (March) as the reason to approach the media center director, the librarian, or the PTO/PTA. Helping stock the library with new titles, reading materials, and resources will benefit ALL students in the school. This would be ideal for an elementary school wide fundraiser. Get the principal involved with prizes and incentives (i.e. pizza party for top class; top seller = Principal for a Day; 30 extra minutes at recess; eat lunch with your favorite teacher, etc.). Another non-traditional group that is an excellent target who needs money!
March generally means the beginning of Spring. Here are a few fun facts about March:
March comes from Mars and is named for the Roman god of war.
March is the best month for basketball.
March is the worst month for productivity.
Daylight savings time begins in the month of March.
Flower of March is the Daffodil.
